Carbon dioxide can be produced in a number of different ways:
Commercial operations collect carbon dioxide from furnace or kiln gases, fermentation process, reactions of carbonates with acids and from reaction of steam with natural gas. The carbon dioxide is purified by dissolving it in a concentrated solution of alkali carbonate and then heating the solution with steam. The gas is evolved and is compressed into steel cylinders. Carbon dioxide is used in the manufacture of sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, and basic carbonate of lead. It is also used to cause the effervescence in carbonated drinks. Liquid carbon dioxide is used in fire extinguishers, and solid carbon dioxide is widely used as a refrigerant.
