Oxair Awarded Methanex Contract

Nov 2000

Kvaener E & C in Melbourne awarded Oxair Gases the contract to design, manufacture and install on a turn key basis, a 15 metric ton (500 Sm3/hr) outdoor oxygen PSA plant for the Methanex Petrochemical Plant in Motunui near New Plymouth in New Zealand.

A nine month project, the plant consists of a single train 500 Sm3/hr oxygen PSA fed by one 750kW Atlas Copco Oil Free Rotary Screw Compressor and MD Desiccant Dryer combination.  The plant incorporates a 30m3 Air Receiver and a 30m3 Oxygen Buffer vessel.  The oxygen is then fed into a 110kW RIX – 3 Stage water-cooled Oxygen Booster Compressor t a pressure of 68 Bar(g) and stored in 4m3 high pressure vessel for Methanex use.

Oxair demonstrated how it could design, engineer, procure and manufacture a plant to meet all of the Methanex criteria with regards to petrochemical safety standards.  The complex operations philosophy of oxygen usage is all controlled from our PSA Control Panel, which in turn controls the main feed compressor, dryer and oxygen booster compressor.

The oxygen booster compressor is fitted with a 110kW variable speed drive motor and controller for oxygen turn down.  For safety reasons, the oxygen compressor is inside a blast wall and there are no control functions at the booster.  All signals and alarms come from our PSA panel.

Due to the safety requirements, special care and attention was paid to oxygen service on valves and piping with respect to the pressure, temperature and gas velocities through piping and valves.  This included using specialty metals such a Monel, Hastalloy C and SS for valves and instrumentation.
