Permea Maritime Protection, A Division of Air Products AS, is a leading manufacturer of offshore nitrogen generation systems. More than 50 systems have been delivered since they were introduced to the market in 1984, with most delivered to North Sea installations.

Enhanced Safety
Offshore nitrogen systems have many applications, most of which enhance safety. However, in recent years, the economic benefits and environmental protection aspects of such systems have also gained attention. Typical applications include inert purging and blanketing of tank and pipelines, purging of natural gas atmospheric vents and sealing of gas on hydrocarbon gas compressors.

Membranes or Combustion
Permea Maritime Protection’s nitrogen systems generate nitrogen from compressed air using PRISMÒ Alpha membrane gas separators. The nitrogen gas produced by these systems is very dry and non-contaminating. Nitrogen purities in the 95-97% range are the most common, but purities above 99% can also be produced. Flow capacities vary from 20 Nm3/h to more than 2000 Nm3/h.

The company’s membrane nitrogen systems are complemented by combustion inert gas systems, which are used in offshore operations on floating storage units, production and testing ships, and on shuttle tankers.

Natural Gas Dehydration Systems (NGD)
Permea Maritime Protection also supplies NGD systems based on PRISMÒ membranes. The systems are flexible, utilise a simple process, and maintain both a minimum of gas loss and a relatively low life cycle cost (LCC). The first commercial installation of the systems is expected to be operational by July 1996.

 

Other Gas Systems

Permea Maritime Protection is also a major supplier to shipping and land-based industry. Hundreds of combustion inert gas systems have been supplied to crude oil tankers, combination vessels, product tankers, barges and battleships. The company has delivered a total of 186 membrane nitrogen systems to chemical tankers and LNG carriers, including 28 controlled atmosphere (nitrogen) systems to reefer vessels.

Permea’s most popular products for land-based industry are its hydrogen recovery systems, which are supplied to oil refineries, petrochemical plants and ammonia plants.
