They are used where oil vapour and the subsequent odour produced in the compressed air stream could contaminate end products (Food, Drug Manufacture, etc) or for odour elimination where compressed air is exhausted into confined worker environments. They are also effective in removing oil Vapour ahead of desiccant Air Dryers to preserve desiccant life. DESIGN CRITERIA
OPERATION
The life of the Carbon is fully dependant on the temperature at which the Air enters the Carbon Tower as well as the amount of Oil or Oil Vapour in the compressed Air stream. This process continues until the Carbon is saturated. When this occurs, the spent carbon is removed from the tower and replaced NB: If the Air is heavily laden with moisture the Carbon may not work as efficiently which in turn de-creases the Oil adsorption capacity of the Carbon. The water will wet the carbon creating a barrier and Oil carry over may result. PRE-FILTRATIONAll Carbon Adsorption Towers are designed to remove Oil in the vapour phase. The possibility of liquid carry over to the Carbon must be avoided and will greatly extend the life of the Carbon. Proper filtration including Water Separators and Oil Removal Coalescing Pre-Filter package will eliminate the carry over of droplets and aerosol-sized mists of both liquid water and compressor lubricant (oil). The use of an Oxair Coalescing Filter package will enhance the Oil adsorption capability of the Carbon Tower . POST-FILTRATIONA 1 micron Dust Filter should be installed after the Carbon tower to prevent any Carbon Dust and solid contaminates one micron and larger from going downstream. Bed lifeAt an inlet oil vapour concentration of 0.1ppm w/w, the Carbon Adsorption Tower has a life of between 50,000 to 60,000 hours at rated flow conditions. This concentration corresponds to Air saturated with typical mineral oil at 75°F and 100 PSIG At inlet oil Vapour concentration of 0.35ppm w/w, the Carbon Tower has a life of 15,000 hours at rated flow conditions. This concentration corresponds to air saturated with typical mineral oil at 100°F and 100 PSIG. |
